Chapter Thirteen

The next day, my stomach rumbled with hunger as I finished the last medical note from the morning’s appointments. I lifted my mug and swirled the coffee sludge. It wasn’t going to stop the pangs in my stomach.
Connie stuck her head into my office. “Lunchtime.” She smiled. “Louisa and I are headed to Susie’s Café.”
“Great. I’ll come too.” I reached for my purse.
“No need, honey. There’s someone here to take you out for lunch.” Her eyes twinkled.
I wrinkled my nose. “What? I’m not expecting anyone.”
“You’ll have to go out the front to see. We’ll be back in an hour,” she said.
I grabbed my purse, tossed on my jacket, and followed Connie to the front door. No one was in the lobby, but a large truck sat…
