The lights for the grocery store shone out into the parking lot as long shadows arced over the pavement from the fading afternoon sunlight. A few cars were parked in front of the sliding glass doors. I turned into the lot and parked in an open spot between a minivan and a beat-up truck.
The glass doors slid open when I approached, and the cooler air from inside blasted my skin. I pulled a cart from the rack by the door. One of the front wheels squeaked, and the cart drifted to the left. The teenager at the checkout waved to me as I wheeled the cart passed her. I walked down the narrow aisles, placing the essentials in the cart. Bread, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti noodles, and sauce. I turned the cart down the frozen food aisle and stopped in front of the pizza selection.
