His truck roared down the street. It turned the corner and disappeared from sight. The neighborhood returned to its quiet state. A dog barked a few blocks away and crickets chirped under the bushes by my window.

I leaned against the door frame, placing my hand over my pounding heart. I closed my eyes.

“Wow, what a kiss.”

A whining and a soft scratching sounded from the other side of the door.

I focused on calming my racing heart as I searched for the keys that I dropped. “I’m coming, Clifford. Giving me a second.”

My hands shook and it took several tries to get the key in the lock. It turned with a click. The door swung in. Clifford stood waiting for me. His tail wagging and he hopped up and down on his front feet.

“Don’t jump on me. I must give this dress back to Melanie.” I knelt and rubbed his soft ears. “Can you believe it? Kaleb just kissed the …
