Kaleb texted me earlier that week saying he was going to pick me up to go riding. I paced my living room Saturday morning, waiting. The sun hadn’t come up, yet. The birds were quiet and only a lonely cricket played its song. Clifford sat in the middle of the room and watched me. Back and forth. My cowboy boots thudded on the worn-out carpet. I twisted the ball cap in my hands.
“He didn’t say where we were going riding. I hope I’m dressed alright.” My jeans were comfortably aged and my tank top showed off my freckled shoulders.
