Chapter Twelve

The colt galloped around the round pen, stirring up dust clouds. The stirrups flopped against his sides, his back hunched, and his ears flickered. I leaned against the corral panel watching the training. Next to me, Henry, one of my oldest ranch hands and mostly retired, sat on an overturned bucket whittling a chunk of wood.

“Easy fella.” Zack took the slack out of the line connected to the colt’s halter. “It’s not that bad.”

Henry spat into the dirt. “That’s a fine-lookin’ horse there.”

The colt broke into a fast trot, snorting and tossing his head. Zack drew in more line bringing the colt closer to him.

I grunted in agreement, not taking my eyes off the colt.

The colt stopped in front of Zack. Its ears flicked back and forth. When Zack spoke quiet words to him, the colt lowered his head. Zack rubbed his forehead and down his neck. He flapped the stirrups and pulled on the s…
