Throwing my car into drive, I pulled away from the house before I lost my nerve. Gavel flew from the tires as I accelerated. In my rearview mirror, Kaleb stood on the porch, watching me. His hurt expression broke my heart even further. I couldn’t stay. I wanted to love him, and I was pretty sure that I did, but I couldn’t lose my job. I loved my career and my new job. I wished with all my heart I didn’t have to choose, but love doesn’t pay the bills.
Tears dripped from the corner of my eyes as I made my way back to Sunnydale on autopilot. After passing the veterinary clinic, I turned on the road to my duplex. The neighborhood was quiet.
