Hi Dear Reader,

If you celebrate American Thanksgiving, I hope you had a great one.

I am so thankful that I have a colleague in the area that I share on-call with. With a few exceptions, I have been on-call for most of my career. It is part of the lifestyle of an equine or large animal vet. Most of the time it isn’t so bad. People try not to call unless it is an absolute emergency. There are three days that I will have to see a sick horse every year: Christmas, Memorial day, and our anniversary. Hubby and I have never been able to celebrate our anniversary on the actual day. The first few years, we had reservations at nice places to eat and never made. After a decade of marriage, we now order pick up from one of our favorite restaruants and eat it at home. It is kind of a running joke.

So anyway, my colleague covered the Thanksgiving holiday so we went to my in-laws and had a traditional dinner with turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes.

Hubby’s family is Norwegian and they also serve lefse along with the meal. Hubby and Little Bock 1 really like it. I’m on the fence. (I’m sorry, Wanda, if you are reading this.) I try it every couple of years but am just missing the love. It’s ok though because Hubby doesn’t really care for the Stollen my family serves at Christmas, which is my favorite part! (My family is German)

Christmas Day

The hands on my wristwatch moved in slow motion. The minutes inched by with the faint ticking of the watch. I paced back and forth in front of the oak tree with a tree swing. It swung slowly back and forth in the early morning breeze. The ropes creaked and groaned. A cricket played his music in the tall grass. Birds called to one another. The sun began to warm the earth with its rays.

I paced ten steps and turned on my heel and paced another. Back and forth and back and forth. My boots wore a path in the grass. I checked my watch again. Six fifty-eight. A couple more minutes. Thoughts tumbled about in my mind. What if I asked her too soon? What if she didn’t believe my feelings for her? What if she thought I was patronizing her?
