The month of June flew by and before I knew it the calendar read July. I saw Kaleb every Tuesday night for dance lessons and occasionally on the weekends. If I had to work on Saturday, he usually brought me lunch at the end of my shift. There was no more touching or kissing. We hung out as friends. I’m not sure either one of us was satisfied with that, but I needed to keep my job.

The veterinary clinic stayed busy even though the heat of summer was upon us. The phone never stopped ringing. Sticky notes covered the appointment book with sick animals, emergencies, and walk-in appointments. Doc and I barely saw each other. We were like two coyotes passing in the night. We knew each other was there but didn’t have time to stop and talk.
